Structural Priming in Sentence Comprehension

چکیده

This study examines structural priming in an on-line reading task that compares reading performance by first and second language readers of English. Robust effects for priming were evident for the second, but not first, language readers, suggesting that priming may occur where there are insufficient sentence traces in memory to support sentence interpretation. The empirical results are simulated using the Syntagmatic Paradigmatic (SP) model, a distributed, instancebased account of sentence comprehension.

Structural Priming and Frequency Effects Interact in Chinese Sentence Comprehension

Previous research in several European languages has shown that the language processing system is sensitive to both structural frequency and structural priming effects. However, it is currently not clear whether these two types of effects interact during online sentence comprehension, especially for languages that do not have morphological markings. To explore this issue, the present study inves...

Lively Looks: Priming Preschoolers’ Predictions of Post-verbal Arguments during Online Sentence Processing

This study explores the grammatical representations employed by preschoolers during online sentence processing. Tomasello and colleagues have argued that young children, unlike adults, are limited to structural representations organized around individual lexical items (Trends in Cognitive Sciences 4 (2000) 156). Evidence for broader syntactic representations in adults comes from, among other th...

Comprehension-to-Comprehension Structural Priming in Adults

Syntactic priming during language production is pervasive and well-studied. Hearing, reading, speaking or writing a sentence with a given structure increases the probability of subsequently producing the same structure, regardless of whether the prime and target share lexical content. In contrast, syntactic priming during comprehension has proven more elusive, fueling claims that comprehension ...

Syntactic priming during sentence comprehension: evidence for the lexical boost.

Syntactic priming occurs when structural information from one sentence influences processing of a subsequently encountered sentence (Bock, 1986; Ledoux et al., 2007). This article reports 2 eye-tracking experiments investigating the effects of a prime sentence on the processing of a target sentence that shared aspects of syntactic form. The experiments were designed to determine the degree to w...

Chapter 5 What Lurks Beneath : Syntactic Priming During Language Comprehension in Preschoolers ( and Adults )

syntactic priming for the kinds of sentences that we intended to explore (post-verbal ambiguities in argument structure). Two of the studies that found robust priming effects (Luka & Barsalou, 2005; Noppeney & Price, 2004) used structures which were not semantically equivalent (e.g., relative clause attachment ambiguities), leaving open the possibility that the priming effects were semantic rat...
